Sustainability Consultant / Senior Sustainability Consultant – Whole Life Carbon

An established multidisciplinary engineering and sustainability consultancy is seeking a Sustainability Consultant or Senior Sustainability Consultant in Bristol, Plymouth or Exeter to join its growing sustainability team. Working across a broad portfolio of projects within the built environment, this role will focus on whole life carbon, embodied carbon and circular economy strategies while also contributing to wider sustainability consultancy services.

The successful candidate will work closely with clients, architects, engineers and contractors to develop practical solutions that help reduce carbon emissions throughout the lifecycle of buildings and infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities

• Deliver whole life carbon assessments for a variety of developments using recognised methodologies and software such as One Click LCA.
• Produce project-specific embodied carbon studies, lifecycle assessments and circular economy strategies.
• Prepare BREEAM Mat 01 assessments and other material-related sustainability deliverables.
• Facilitate workshops with design teams to establish carbon reduction objectives and develop practical strategies for achieving project targets.
• Engage with contractors during construction to review carbon performance, monitor progress and support the delivery of agreed sustainability outcomes.
• Support discussions with planning authorities and other stakeholders regarding whole life carbon and circular economy requirements where required.
• Contribute to the continuous development of technical knowledge, tools and best practice within the sustainability team.
• Support the delivery of broader sustainability services including environmental certifications, wellbeing assessments and energy strategies.
• Carry out building performance analysis, operational energy assessments and overheating studies where appropriate.
• Assist in developing sustainability and net zero strategies for both new and existing developments.
• Mentor junior consultants and provide technical guidance across project teams.
• Manage smaller projects or individual workstreams, ensuring delivery to programme, quality and budget.
• Participate in industry research, innovation initiatives and technical guidance development.

Candidate Profile

Suitable applicants are likely to have experience within sustainability or engineering consultancy and possess strong technical knowledge in several of the following areas:

• Whole life carbon and embodied carbon assessments.
• Circular economy principles and reporting.
• Industry guidance including RICS Whole Life Carbon, UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard, UKGBC, LETI and IStructE guidance.
• Net zero carbon strategies.
• Sustainability and energy planning.
• Environmental assessment methodologies such as BREEAM, WELL or Fitwel.
• Building performance modelling and energy analysis.
• Planning support for sustainable developments.

The ideal candidate will have:

• Experience delivering sustainability consultancy services within the built environment.
• A relevant engineering, environmental or scientific degree.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
• Excellent communication and workshop facilitation abilities.
• The ability to manage client relationships and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary design teams.
• A genuine interest in driving sustainable design and low-carbon development.
